Prior to year 2010 when Solid waste management program was started, there was no regular and organized household waste collection in the basti. As a result waste from households found its way to streets, open spaces and sewer system resulting not only in environmental and health issues but also in choked sewer system in the basti. Similarly waste from commercial units was seen accumulated at various points on streets leading to the Dargah.

In 2008, to improve the waste disposal systems in the basti, a door to door waste collection was been initiated with 25 families in Khusro Nagar. The families have agreed to pay Rs 20 per month to the waste collector. With simpler payment systems and effective collection personnels, the project’s reach has increased to 80%. This has also reduced littering in the Basti, and dumping of garbage in the Nallah. The number of households linked to the regular door to door waste collection in the Basti stands at 1161 including 60 small commercial units. This is almost 72 % of the households in the Basti and 23% of the commercial units.

The payment to waste collectors is subsidized by the project though money is also collected from households. The subsidy is gradually reducing year-on-year.
