Urban Improvements

Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti remains a densely populated and congested urban settlement, with its existing infrastructure under severe strain. As part of the project a series of development initiatives to improve the overall urban environment are now being implemented

Physical surveys have been completed and exhaustive consultations with the resident community are planned together with landscaping of open parks and a street improvement initiative that will enhance the quality of life and the historic character of the Basti.

CURRENT INITIATIVES
URBAN STUDIES : Physical surveys were carried out to document and analyse the urban setting and spatial relationships of the Basti. The surveys, carried out after a gap of 80 years, identified urban and spatial problems, environmental concerns, open space utilisation and areas in urgent need of intervention to improve the quality of life in the Basti.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS : As part of this initiative, seven principal streets in the Basti have been identified for street improvement. These streets are entry points into the Basti and lead to important spiritual/ religious or heritage/cultural sites such as the Dargah, Kalan Masjid, Baoli and the MCD complex of buildings (polyclinic, school, baraat ghar and public toilets). The planned improvement included surface treatment of streets, upgrading of streets lights, additional parking facilities.

PARKS & OPEN-SPACE DEVELOPMENT : The open spaces in Nizamuddin Basti were found to be poorly maintained. Large tracts of land lay unused while two parks on the periphery of the Basti were sadly neglected. Barely 2% of the resident population used park spaces for recreational purposes. The project initiatives aim to landscape and re-develop the parks to improve the environment and provide residents with much needed common use green spaces. The open spaces are managed by the DDA and approvals to landscape the parks were received in November 2009.
