Education is an important constituent of the urban renewal project with AKF implementing education programmes that are designed keeping in mind community aspirations. The project’s defining objective is to provide children of the basti with greater access to quality education in a secure school environment. AKDN interventions are based on education baseline assessment of school enrolment, literacy levels and completion rates in the Basti.
Co- funded by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and led by a multi-disciplinary team, the initiative powers infrastructural improvement, curriculum development and pedagogical support to students, faculty and school management. The project benefits from the Aga Khan Foundation’s longstanding and international experience in the field of education.

Current Initiatives |
|
Education initiatives in Nizamuddin Basti are a significant component of the AGA KHAN DEVELOPMENT NETWORK urban renewal project. Co-funded by Sir Ratan Tata Trust, these initiatives address key concerns raised by the community during consultations. Besids a major renovation including which incorporated Building-as-a-Learning-Aid components, interventions led by a multi-disciplinary team have included support to faculty, students of the school and youth from the Basti. The programme includes follwing initiatives:

Early Childhood Care & Development |

Early childhood experiences impact the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of children. AKDN’s early childhood care and development programme (ECCD) facilitates holistic development of young children, inculcates the school going habit and eases their transition to a formal learning system.

School Improvement Initiatives |

|
The AKDN school improvement initiative has created a pleasing school environment and the renovated MCD School compares with the best in the city. The improved facilities offer quality education and encourage school going is apparent by the marked increase in enrolment of children at the MCD School, up from 180 to 413 in the past between 2008-09.

Complimentary Education |
|
|
Professional development of school staff and community teachers through workshops and training programmes expands their knowledge base and improves teaching proficiency. The project has structured theme specific training programmes and workshops on Life Skills Education, Early Learning and Developing Education kits for school and community teachers.

Hole in the Wall Project |
|
|
The Hole in the Wall Project has been introduced in Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti to make the joy of learning through computers accessible to the young ones in the area. The machines are loaded with a number of games that have learning outcomes in Mathematics, language,science, and life skills. Without any supervision, the children are free to use the systems at any time in the day and learn through play. One kiosk with two machines has been set up with three more to go.

English Access Micro-Scholarship Programme |

The English Access Micro-Scholarship Programme, launched with the US Embassy in Dec 2009, supports the teaching of English to 14-16 year olds for 100 children who have enrolled in the 360 hour interactive teaching programme to improve English Language skills.
